August 2, 2013 in Events

rsz_1dsc04681When we came to know about the arrival of our UK based Alumni Mr. Debasis Majumdar in India, we immediately thought of inviting him to SPS to address the present students of classes X and XII.

Mr. Debasis Majumdar is presently the Head of the UK Ship Register in the British Civil Service, working in the Ministry for Shipping and Transport in the UK Govt. He is the first Asian/Indian to reach this post ever. Posted in the Head Office of Her Majesty Coastguard at Southampton in England, he heads the entire British Merchant Navy with the responsibility of 1500 large British flag ships and over 300 shipping companies worldwide. He works directly under the Cabinet Shipping Minister of Britain and has Ministerial Targets. Not only has he received two performance awards with cash prize from the UK Government for service excellence, but also is a Warrant Card holder in the UK Government and has the major responsibility and authority of issuing arrest warrants to marine convicts in the UK.

Over a career span of almost 30 years, Mr. Majumdar has worked in major countries across the globe. Apart from India, he had postings in China, Dubai, Singapore and currently in the United Kingdom.

On 31st July, 2013, we had the pleasure of having him with us. In the presence of the School EC and a few teachers, Mr. Navin Jain felicitated him with a Shawl followed by a speech by the President of SPAAA, Mr. Tinku Kapoor. Mr. Majumdar gave a presentation on Merchant Navy to all the students of St. Patrick’s School. He not only informed the students regarding the criteria, qualifications and requirements, but also explained the benefits of being in the Merchant Navy. He shared his experiences, thoughts and views about various career options available in his field of Merchant Navy. His motivational talk enhanced the knowledge and broadened the perspective of all the students present.

Following the presentation, a question-answer session was done. Many students clarified their doubts and questions from Mr. Majumdar. It was indeed clear that this inspirational talk by Mr. Majumdar had definitely ignited a spark in the minds of most of the students and induced them to consider this as a career option. In the end Mr. Majumdar was presented with a School Tie from the School EC as a sign of respect and appreciation.
